KUCHING, Oct 12 -- A total of 277 people were killed in road accidents in Sarawak between January and August this year, said state infrastructure and communication minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong.
He said in the whole of last year, 421 people were killed on Sarawak roads while during the same period nationwide, 6,950 people lost their lives in road accidents.
Manyin, who is also Sarawak Road Safety Council chairman, said carelessness and indiscipline among some drivers and motorcyclists were the main causes of road accidents.
"Thus, it is not right for the public to blame the authorities whenever an accident occurred," he said at the closing ceremony of the state-level Shell/MBKS/MKJR Traffic Games here today.
Meanwhile at the traffic games, 352 primary and secondary school pupils from 22 school in the state participated in the competition.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) (C) Chung Hua, Krokop Miri was adjudged champion in the primary school category while SJK (C) Chung Hua, Serian emerged runner-up. Third placing went to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Apong, Kuching.
In the secondary school category, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Kuching emerged the champion while SMK Pesantren Abdul Taib Mahmud, Samarahan and SMK Pujut Miri were placed second and third.
