Potassium-rich foods offer health benefits for older women

7 Oct 2014
HEALTHY post-menopausal women reduce their risk of stroke if their diet is rich in potassium, according to a research team led by Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, Ph.D., of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.

According to Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller, previous research has shown that potassium could lower blood pressure, but it was never clear as to whether it could ward off stroke.

"Our findings give women another reason to eat their fruits and vegetables," she says.

"Fruits and vegetables are good sources of potassium, and potassium not only lowers postmenopausal women's risk of stroke, but also death."

Over the course of 11 years, researchers worked with 90,137 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 to 79, observing their potassium intake and incidence of stroke.

At the start of the study, none of the participants had undergone a stroke and they averaged a daily potassium quotient from food of 2,611mg.

Those whose diets were among the richest in potassium reduced their general risk of stroke by 12% over those whose diets contained the least amount of potassium.

Participants whose blood pressure was in the normal range and who were not taking medications for hypertension reduced their general risk of stroke by 21%.

On the other hand, for women with high blood pressure, including those taking medications for hypertension, a potassium rich diet did not lower risk of stroke, suggesting that a high potassium diet could be beneficial before the onset of high blood pressure.

"Our findings suggest that women need to eat more potassium-rich foods," says Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller. "You won't find high potassium in junk food. Some foods high in potassium include white and sweet potatoes, bananas and white beans."

Before piling these foods into the grocery cart in bulk, Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller suggests checking with one's doctor to assess potassium intake because too much of it can be dangerous to the heart.

Still, only 2.8% of women in Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller's study met the U.S. Department of Agriculture's recommended daily potassium intake of 4,700mg and only 16% of participants met the World Health Organisation's daily potassium recommendation of 3,510mg.

The study did not take sodium consumption into account, and the balance between sodium and potassium is important. Further research, says Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller, should account for sodium and investigate the need for a potassium rich diet in younger people. – AFP Relaxnews

Tea drinkers may have better general health, study says

7 Oct 2014
A NEW study reveals that drinking tea could reduce non-cardiovascular mortality by 24%, possibly thanks to a combination of tea's antioxidant content and the other healthy lifestyle habits that tea drinkers often maintain.

"If you have to choose between tea or coffee it's probably better to drink tea," says Professor Nicholas Danchin of the cardiology unit at the Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris, who presented the study at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.

The study's 131,401 participants ranged in age from 18 to 95 years old and data was retrieved from their health check-ups at the Paris IPC Preventive Medicine Centre between January 2001 and December 2008.

Consumption of coffee or tea was self-reported and participants fell into three groups: One group consumed no coffee or tea, the next consumed between one and four cups and the third group reported drinking more than four cups per day.

Data revealed that coffee drinkers were at greater risk for CV, especially if they smoked. Curiously, the percentage of smokers increased with amount of coffee consumption.

Of the coffee abstainers, only 17% smoked; of those who drank between one and four cups, 31% were smokers; the group who drank more than four cups smoked at a rate of 57%.

Coffee abstainers were also more physically active: 45% of them engaged in exercise compared with 41% of heavy coffee drinkers. Although it may seem like a small difference, Professor Danchin points out that four percent accounts for many people given the size of the study.

The profile of tea drinkers was the reverse of that of coffee drinkers. One third, or 34%, of tea abstainers were smokers compared to only 24% of tea drinkers who drank one to four cups and 29% of those who drank more than four cups.

Tea drinkers were more active relative to how much tea they consumed, with 43% of moderate tea drinkers being active compared to 46% of the heavy tea drinkers.

When researchers adjusted the data for age, it was revealed that heavy drinkers had a 4-5 mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and a 3 mmHg decrease in diastolic blood pressure (DBP).

"Overall we tend to have a higher risk profile for coffee drinkers and a lower risk profile for tea drinkers," says Professor Danchin. "We also found big differences with gender. Men tend to drink coffee much more than women, while women tend to drink more tea than men."

A mean 3.5 year follow up indicated there had been 95 deaths from CV and 632 deaths from other causes.

Coffee consumption appeared to significantly increase non-CV mortality although when the data was adjusted for smoking, the increased risk disappeared.

"The trend for higher mortality in coffee drinkers is probably largely explained by the fact that there are more smokers in the group who drink a lot of coffee," says Professor Danchin.

As with coffee, when tea drinkers were assessed for risk of CV mortality, the reduction effect lost its significance when the data was adjusted for age, gender and smoking. Tea, however, significantly lowered the risk of non-CV death, for the hazard ratio was 0.76% compared with tea abstainers.

The European Society of Cardiology Congress is being held in Barcelona from August 30 to September 3. – AFP Relaxnews

The Health Benefits of Almonds

26 Sept 2014

Regulation of Cholesterol

Regular consumption of almonds helps to increase the level of high density lipoproteins (HDL) and they reduce the level of low density lipoproteins (LDL). This balance is vital to a healthy cholesterol level, and a reduction of LDL (bad cholesterol) is always a good thing.

Reducing Cancer Risk

Researchers at the Department of Nutrition, University of California, Davis, conducted a study to determine the effect of almonds on colon cancer. According to the authors, the results suggested that "almond consumption may reduce colon cancer risk and does so via at least one almond lipid-associated component." Their research was published in Cancer Letters.

Improve Skin Health & Complexion

The benefits of almonds in regards to skin health are well known, and almond oil massages are often recommended for newborn babies. Almond milk is also added to some soaps, because of almonds well-established reputation of improving the complexion of skin.

Help Soothe a Headache

According to past research, magnesium, found in almonds, may protect your body from the brunt of a headache by relaxing blood vessels. Migraine sufferers may also experience relief by following a diet rich in magnesium, some experts believe. “To increase your magnesium intake, try consuming magnesium-rich foods such as bananas, dried apricots, avocados, almonds, cashews, brown rice, legumes and seeds,” suggests Palinski.

Protect Against Diabetes

Almonds also help to reduce the reactionary rise in glucose and insulin levels after meals. Almonds help regulate the absorption and processing of glucose, making the entire process much smoother, and subsequently safer.

Bagaimanakah Insurans Kemalangan Peribadi Berfungsi?

25 Sept 2014
Insurans kemalangan peribadi berfungsi seperti hampir sama semua polisi insurans lain.

Adakah Insurans Kemalangan Peribadi Mempunyai Pengecualian Perlindungan?

Lindungi Diri Sebelum Berjalan

23 Sept 2014

Jangan lupa tanyakan mengenai prosedur tuntutan.

Make Travel Insurance Compulsory

8 Sept 2014

I REFER to the report “When travel plans go awry” (Sunday Star, May 4).
I agree travel insurance is very important and necessary when one travels abroad.
Accidents are unforeseeable and can cause a lot of problems and misery especially when they happen in a foreign land.
With travel insurance, one can get help from a medical assistance provider by calling a toll free telephone number.
The medical assistance provider will arrange for emergency medical evacuation of the insured person from the scene of accident to the nearest suitable hospital for treatment and then repatriation to the home country for continued treatment.
Imagine an accident happening in North America or some remote locations in Asia or Africa and the difficulties one will encounter without professional help.
The medical, evacuation and repatriation costs can amount to a very substantial amount. All these will be covered by the policy.
This is the single most important benefit of a travel insurance policy.
There are other benefits given by the travel insurance policy such as travel delay, missed connection, lost luggage, repatriation of mortal remains besides personal accident and personal liability.
The premium is very affordable and will not burn a hole in the pocket of the person travelling on holiday or business.
I read not so long ago the Tourism Ministry had asked MATTA to ensure every person travelling abroad under a package arranged by their members is insured for travel insurance.
For those travelling on their own, please make sure you take up travel insurance. Always remember: Never travel without a travel policy.
I join the call to make travel insurance compulsory.

Insurans Kemalangan Peribadi : Sebuah Pelan Polisi Insurans Mampu Milik

19 Aug 2014

24 Jul 2014

Health is a dynamic process because it is always changing. We all have times of good health, times of sickness, and maybe even times of serious illness. As our lifestyles change, so does our level of health.

Those of us who participate in regular physical activity do so partly to improve the current and future level of our health. We strive toward an optimal state of well-being. As our lifestyle improves, our health also improves and will experience less disease and sickness.

The other components of health (Greenberg, 2004, p.7) that are just important as physical health include the following:

  • Social health: The ability to interact well with people and the environment and to have satisfying personal relationships.
  • Mental health: The ability to learn and grow intellectual. Life experience as well as more formal structure for example school, university to enhance mental health.
  • Emotional health: The ability to control emotions so that you feel comfortable expressing them and can express them appropriately.
  • Spiritual health: a belief in some unifying force. It different from a person to person but has the concept of faith at its core.

Each day we work toward maximizing our level of health and wellness to live long, full and healthy lives. To pursuit of health, personal growth, improve quality of life relies on living in balance life. To achieve balance we need to care for our mind, body and spirit.

If you are healthy, you can do everything and you look very active. Unless you are unhealthy you can not do any activities. If you feel healthy you are able to do any work without tired. Other wise you can't.

There is a saying that "Health is Wealth". It means if you are healthy you can do you work brilliantly, and you can get good results. That may makes you wealthy also. That's why everyone like to be healthy.

What Causes Obesity?

18 Jun 2014

Causes of obesity. Obesity is generally caused by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy from your diet, particularly from fat and sugars, but do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, much of the surplus energy is then stored by the body as fat. Calories.

The energy value of food is measured in units called calories. The average physically active man needs about 2,500 calories a day to maintain a healthy weight, and the average physically active woman needs about 1,500 – 2,000 a day.

For example, eating a large take away fast food like hamburger, fries and soft drink can total 1,500 calories, and that is just one meal. Another problem is that many people are not physically active, so lots of the calories they consume end up being accumulated in the  body as fat.

Malaysia's Obesity Rate Highest in Asia

Malaysia has been rated as the highest among Asian countries for obesity. According to the findings from British medical journal, The Lancet, showed that 49% of women and 44% of men in this country were found to be obese.

The risk factors that contribute to obesity can be complex combination of genetics, metabolic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Some  endocrine disorders, diseases and medications can also cause weight to increase.

Common Factors Influencing Obesity

Genetics:  Studies have shown that you can  inherit a tendency toward obesity. Your chance of being overweight increases 25 percent if one or both of your parents is obese.

Lack of Physical Activity:  Many people have jobs that involve sitting at a desk for most of the day.  Lack of physical activity is another important factor related to obesity. Most of them also more rely on theirs cars rather than walking, taking the stairs or cycling.  The more people relax the more they tend to watch television, surfing internet, play games and rarely take regular exercise or start doing physical activity.

Metabolic: How you expend energy differs from how someone else will. Metabolic and hormonal factors are not the same for everyone but these factors play a role in determining weight gain.

Lifestyle: Poor diet and overeating in combination with a sedentary lifestyle contributes to obesity. Unhealthy eating habits from parents when you are young and continue into adulthood. Changing your behavior can affect these lifestyle choices. The best way is avoid drinking too many sugary drinks, fast food, eating large amount and so on.

Boost Your Health Naturally With Honey!

17 Jun 2014
What is Honey?

In a nutshell, honey is a 100% pure and natural sweetener made and stored in honeycombs by the honey bees. Nearly one million tonnes of honey is produced worldwide every year.

Vitamins in honey include B complex vitamins, essential for the production of energy in the body. Honey contains a balance ratio of healthy sugars including fructose and glucose to offer a pre-workout energy boost that is also sweet like sugar.

Not only that, but it also contains vitamins, minerals and protein. According to the National Institutes of Health, honey is hygroscopic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and has remarkable debriding action.

Honey is a sweet treat. In fact, it is man’s oldest sweetener. It can be a good substitute for sugar in our drinks and food. But it also good for many other things and treating many other conditions. Reliance on commercialized medicines which contains too much chemicals can become hazardous to our health.

What Are the Benefits Health of Honey?

Soothes Sore Throat
  • One of the better known health benefits of honey is that it is able to help treat sore throats. Honey not only soothes throats but can also kill certain bacteria that causes the infection. The Chinese believe that excess “heatiness” in the body causes sore throat and taking honey drink can be helpful.
Heals Wounds
  • When honey comes into contact with body moisture, the glucose oxidase enzyme introduced to the honey by the bee slowly releases the antiseptic hydrogen peroxide at a sufficient level to be effective against bacteria but not tissue damaging. Not only is honey anti-bacterial, it also draws body fluids and nutrients to the area and so assist cell growth and prevents a scars forming by drying out of the wound.
Boost Memory
  • Studies show that consuming raw honey can improve memory. It also offers many other health benefits. Raw honey calms nerves and relieves anxiety, there by promoting relaxation and rest. One to two teaspoons per day is recommended.
Has a Low Calorie Level
  • Another quality of honey is that, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.
Reduce Scalps Problems and Dandruff
  • In a study involving patients with chronic seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, the participants were asked to apply honey diluted with 10 percent warm water to their problems areas and leave it on for three hours before rinsing with warm water. In all of the patients, itching was relieved and scaling disappeared within one week.
  • Skin lesions were completely healed within two weeks, and patients showed subjective improvement in hair loss as well. When applied weekly thereafter for six months, patients showed no sign of relapse.

The Budwig Diet

16 Jun 2014
Dr.Budwig diet has been successfully helping people with tumors and degenerative diseases, but also Arthritis, Asthma, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Multiple sclerosis, Heart Disease, Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne and other illnesses and conditions.

Budwig Diet Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese (FOCC) or Quark recipe:

Generally, each tablespoon of Flaxseed Oil is blended with 2 or more tablespoons of low-fat organic Cottage Cheese or Quark.

1 US Tablespoon = 15 ml and 1 British Tablespoon is 18 ml - 16 tablespoons = cup and 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup.

Note: Whenever Tablespoons are mentioned it is the standard US tablespoon, which is the equivalent of the British "dessert" spoon.

How To Make The Budwig Muesli:

  • Blend 3 Tablespoons (British dessert spoons) of flaxseed oil with 6 Tbps low-fat (less than 2%) quark or cottage cheese with a hand-held immersion electric blender for up to a minute.
  • If the mixture is too thick and/or the oil does not disappear you may need to add 2 or 3 Tablespoons of milk (goat milk would be the best option). Do not add water or juices when blending flaxseed oil with cottage cheese or quark.
  • The mixture should be like rich whipped cream with no separated oil. Remember you must mix ONLY the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese and nothing else at first. Always use organic food products when possible.
  • Now once the flaxseeds oil and cottage cheese are well mixed grind 2 Tbps of whole flaxseeds and add to the mixture. Please note that freshly ground flax seeds must be used within 20 minutes after being ground or they will become rancid. Therefore, do not grind up flaxseeds ahead of time and store.
  • Next mix in by hand or with the blender 1 teaspoon of honey (raw non-pasteurized is recommended).

(Optional)
  • For variety you may add other ingredients such as sugar free apple sauce, cinnamon, vanilla, lemon juice, chopped almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews (no peanuts), pine kernels, rosehip-marrow.
  • For people who find the Budwig Muesli hard to take these added foods will make the mixture more palatable. Some of our patients have even added a pinch of Celtic sea salt and others put in a pinch of cayenne pepper for a change.
  • Dr. Harvey Diamond who wrote a book on the importance of "food combining" and other experts recommend not mixing fruit with other foods (they say to eat fruit on its own on an empty stomach and wait 10 minutes before eating other foods) If however you do not have any digestion problems you may want to add various fruits, especially berries fresh or frozen. No more than 1 cup of fruit should be added.
  • Add ground up Apricot kernels (no more than 6 kernels per day). Or you may decide to eat these apricot kernels on their own.

Nausea : Some people get nausea from the ground flaxseeds, to counter this by taking a small bowl of papaya immediately afterwards or some fresh peppermint tea. Also, put a lot of papaya into the morning muesli too, it may be there is a special enzymes in the papaya that quells the nausea.

The Benefits of Flaxseed Oil

Omega-3: Essential fatty acids, "good" fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.

Lignans: Which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods.

Fiber: Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.
