Make Travel Insurance Compulsory

8 Sept 2014

I REFER to the report “When travel plans go awry” (Sunday Star, May 4).
I agree travel insurance is very important and necessary when one travels abroad.
Accidents are unforeseeable and can cause a lot of problems and misery especially when they happen in a foreign land.
With travel insurance, one can get help from a medical assistance provider by calling a toll free telephone number.
The medical assistance provider will arrange for emergency medical evacuation of the insured person from the scene of accident to the nearest suitable hospital for treatment and then repatriation to the home country for continued treatment.
Imagine an accident happening in North America or some remote locations in Asia or Africa and the difficulties one will encounter without professional help.
The medical, evacuation and repatriation costs can amount to a very substantial amount. All these will be covered by the policy.
This is the single most important benefit of a travel insurance policy.
There are other benefits given by the travel insurance policy such as travel delay, missed connection, lost luggage, repatriation of mortal remains besides personal accident and personal liability.
The premium is very affordable and will not burn a hole in the pocket of the person travelling on holiday or business.
I read not so long ago the Tourism Ministry had asked MATTA to ensure every person travelling abroad under a package arranged by their members is insured for travel insurance.
For those travelling on their own, please make sure you take up travel insurance. Always remember: Never travel without a travel policy.
I join the call to make travel insurance compulsory.
