22 Sept 2014
GEORGE TOWN, Sept 21 — Eighteen people were injured in an accident involving two city-bound factory buses along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway, here this morning.
Penang Traffic and Public Order chief Supt Ibrahim Abu Bakar said during the 7.30am incident, one of the buses had stopped by the roadside at a corner to check on noises emanating from the tyres while another bus came from behind and crashed into the rear of the other bus.
“When the first bus had stopped, the second bus which was coming from behind could not avoid the bus in time and crashed into the other bus,” he said adding that both buses were from Bayan Lepas and on their way to send home factory workers.
The driver of the first bus, Ramli Md Ismail, 61, suffered severe injuries to his right hand while six other passengers escaped injuries.
Ibrahim said 17 passengers from the second bus suffered injuries, including a fractured leg, and were sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment while the driver, Ooi Boon Sing, 58, and 13 other workers were not hurt.
He said the employers of the workers had been notified of the accident. — Bernama
